BART STARR

Game 227 | June 24, 1974 | Bobby Riggs, Bart Starr
This was one of the strangest pairings in Dunkers' history, featuring the straight-arrow Green Bay quarterback with the playboy tennis hustler. Starr quarterbacked the Packers from 1956-1971 and was MVP of the first two Super Bowls. He was to come back as coach of the Packers in 1975. Riggs was nearly forgotten when, at age 55, he challenged two of the top female tennis players in the world to televised matches. In a match staged on Mother's Day in 1973 he defeated Margaret Court 6-2, 6-1. On September 20, 1973, in a nationally televised match, he lost to Billie Jean King in the "Battle of the Sexes" 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Bart Starr was yet another Sid Hartman "get".
