Ben's visit was his first visit as the Gopher Men's Basketball team head coach and the first Dunkers in-person meeting with members since Feb. 13, 2020 with Gov. Walz due to COVID-19 pandemic
rules.
The former Gopher and DeLaSalle star, became the 18th head coach in Gopher men’s basketball history. The youngest head coach in the Big Ten had to build an entire team from scratch. After a quick start, the team finished with a 13-17 record. His appearance marked the return to live meetings for the Dunkers.

After the Gophers fired Richard Pitino they turned to Johnson to lead the team in 2021. A star at Minneapolis DeLaSalle high school, Johnson played college ball at both Northwestern and Minnesota. He became the youngest coach in the Big Ten and his young team finished last in the Big Ten in 2022-23 with a 9-22 record.
