BOBBY BELL

Game 101 | December 12, 1961 | Sandy Stephens, John Mulvena, Bobby Bell
The 1961 Gopher football team went to the Rose Bowl for a second straight year and won the game over UCLA by a score of 21-3. Stephens and tackle Bell both were named All Americans. Stephens was the first African American All-American quarterback in college football history. Mulvena, a guard, was the team captain.

Game 754 | April 23, 2010 | Bobby Bell
Thought by many to be the greatest defensive player in University of Minnesota football history, Bell talked about the path from high school quarterback in segregated Shelby, N.C., to All-American defensive tackle at Minnesota. He remembered that President John Kennedy, talking about the officiating, said: "You guys got robbed in that Wisconsin game." He also recalled a game in which his father came into the locker room at halftime to find his injured son lying on the training table with a game-ending leg injury. “I didn't come all the way from North Carolina to watch my son on any table," he told him. Bell re-entered the game in the second half.

Game 762 | September 16, 2010 | Judge Dickson, Bobby Bell, Tom Teigen Julian Hook,
Tommy King, Bob McNeil

Nearly every living member of the 1960 Gopher football team was in town to celebrate the Gophers last national championship. Six former players provided memories about a special season that included a Big 10 title and trip to the Rose Bowl. Bell's jersey number 78 was retired by the University in a special ceremony on September 18 at TCF Bank Stadium.
