In 1975 Coach Knight was well on his way to the third of four straight Big Ten basketball championships. He coached at Indiana from 1971-2000 and led his teams to three NCAA championships, one NIT title and 11 Big Ten titles. In 1984 he coached a Michael Jordan-led U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in Los Angeles.

Under Coach Knight the Indiana Hoosiers won their second of three NCAA titles in 1981. That team was led by sophomore guard Isiah Thomas, and the Hoosiers defeated North Carolina 63-50 in the finals. Future Minnesota Timberwolves Coach Randy Wittman was a sophomore on that team which also featured Ray Tolbert and Landon Turner.

The Indiana Hoosiers were in town to play the Gophers en route to a 20-9 record and an appearance in NCAA post-season play. A month after his Minnesota appearance Knight was featured in an unflattering piece on the CNN/SI network. In September, beset by a series of encounters with Indiana President Miles Brand, he resigned after 29 years at Indiana where he had a career record of 661-240.

In town to golf and speak at a Federated Insurance event, Coach Knight accepted Sid Hartman's invitation to speak to Dunkers. He had just finished the third of what was to be seven seasons as the basketball coach at Texas Tech. He said he was working with ESPN to produce a series called "Knight School,"about a handful of Texas Tech students competing for a non-scholarship spot on the basketball team.
