With the dismissal of popular Mike Tice as Vikings coach, owner Zygi Wilf quickly focused on Childress as his next coach. Childress had never been a head coach, but he was highly regarded as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2005. Childress had previous experience in the midwest as wide receivers coach at Illinois from 1981-1984 and as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Wisconsin from 1991-1998.

The Vikings improved from 6-10 to 8-8 under second-year coach Childress, but failed to make the playoffs for the third straight year. Childress said he was excited about the drafting of Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson. His enthusiasm was rewarded as Peterson was named NFL Rookie Offensive Player of the Year. The defensive line, anchored by Pat Williams and Kevin Williams, was the best in the NFL against the run, but the offense struggled all year under the direction of second-year quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

He explained his decision to replace struggling quarterback Tarvaris Jackson with veteran Gus Frerotte. He said that free agent defensive lineman Jared Allen should give the team the most dominant defensive line in the league and that he expected running back Adrian Peterson to pick up from where he left off as the 2007 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
