Under first-year coach Bill Musselman Gopher basketball took on a new look in 1971. The team's exciting pre-game show filled Williams Arena 30 minutes before each game, and Musselman brought in high-profile recruits such as Clyde Turner and Ron Behagen to mix with returnees Jim Brewer and Corky Taylor. Needing one more player, the team turned to the intramural ranks to find Dave Winfield, and the Gophers went on to win the Big Ten championship. The players were at Dunkers as part of a 40-year reunion.
