Founded in 1993 as the Burnet, the annual men's senior event was played in its early years at Bunker Hills in the northern suburb of Coon Rapids. David Graham, in town to play in the senior event, won two major championships, the 1979 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills near Detroit, and the 1981 U.S. Open at Merion, just west of Philadelphia. He also finished third at the 1985 Open Championship, after sharing the third-round lead.

Born in Australia, Graham played most of his professional golf in the United States, winning eight PGA Tour events including two majors, the 1979 PGA Championship and the 1981 U.S. Open at Merion Country Club. Over his long career he won events on six different continents, a record he shares with Gary Player. He turned 50 in 1996 and won three times on the Champions Tour.

The 69-year-old Australian, here to compete in the 3M Championship, told Dunkers of being encouraged to switch from being a left-handed golfer in his early teens. The change paid off with 38 professional wins including the 1981 U.S. Open and the 1979 PGA Championship. He was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015.
