Signed as free agents in the off season, both Madsen and Hoiberg quickly established themselves as solid members of both the Minnesota Timberwolves and the community. Madsen, who played three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, received an economics degree from Stanford University. He gave the Timberwolves a strong inside presence. Hoiberg, one of the top three-point shooters in the NBA, graduated from Iowa State. He had open heart surgery in 2005 that forced him to retire as an active player, but he became the team's assistant general manager in 2007.

Selected by Boston with the seventh pick in the 2006 NBA draft, Foye, a point guard, was immediately traded to the Portland Trail Blazers and from Portland to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played in all 82 games his rookie season, averaging 10.1 points per game. Injuries limited him to 39 games the next year as his scoring average rose to 13.1. In June of 2006 Foye was diagnosed with a rare condition, "situs inversus," in which all his organs are arranged in the mirror image of what is normal. Hoiberg, forced into a front-office position because of a heart condition earlier in 2006, talked about his recovery and transition from the playing floor to a desk job.

Rated by the Timberwolves as the top big man in the 2008 draft, Love came to the team, along with guard Mike Miller, in a draft-night trade for O.J. Mayo. The 19-year-old Love, who played one season at UCLA, is the nephew of Mike Love, one of the founding members of The Beach Boys. Hoiberg, whose NBA playing career ended after successful heart surgery, said he stays in touch with Gopher linebacker recruit Sam Maresh, who also had heart surgery by the same Mayo Clinic physician.
