The Gund brothers were awarded an NHL expansion team in San Jose, and they sold their interest in the North Stars to Morris Belzberg and Baldwin, a movie producer who was one of the founders of the World Hockey League. Baldwin became president of the North Stars and, in his first move, hired future Hall of Famer Bobby Clarke as the team's general manager; replacing Jack Ferriera, who moved on to San Jose.
