Game 444 | June 29, 1993 | Tom Kelly, Jerry Bell, Andy MacPhail, Dave Winfield
One of the great athletes in the history of the University of Minnesota, St. Paul-native Winfield came home to play for the Twins in 1993-'94. On Sept. 16, 1993, at age 41, he collected his 3,000th major league hit off Oakland reliever Dennis Eckersley. Winfield starred in both baseball and basketball for the Gophers and was drafted by Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the American Basketball Association and the National Football League (Vikings), despite the fact he had never played organized football.

Representatives from the Twins, Vikings and Gophers talked about their proposed new facilities. The Gophers received legislative approval in 2006 and will begin play in TCF Bank Stadium in 2009. The Twins, after 11 years of work by President Bell, reached a deal with Hennepin County and the Minnesota Legislature in that same 2006 session and will open Target Field in 2010. Kelly, President of the Vikings at the time, talked of the need to find a solution before the end of the Vikings' Metrodome lease in 2011. As of 2008 no solution had been found.

With construction getting underway for the 2010 opening of the Minnesota Twins new outdoor ballpark, the team gathered a team of experts to brief Dunkers on what to expect. Hennepin County Commissioners Mike Opat and Mark Stenglein talked about traffic and transportation considerations. Jerry Bell, long-time Dunker and head of Twins Sports Inc., talked about the long history of finding a plan that would be acceptable to the Minnesota Legislature, and Earl Santee of HOK Sport described the design and construction schedule.

With Dunkers Dave St. Peter and Jerry Bell leading the way, Dunker members ate breakFast in the Metropolitan Club and got a complete tour of the Twins' new stadium a week before the home opener against the Boston Red Sox. At mid-season, ESPN Magazine rated Target Field as offering the best stadium experience in America.
