Admitting that he had not been his wife's first choice either, the new Gopher football coach told Dunker members he was familiar with both the Big Ten and the Midwest recruiting area from his years at Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois. He said he was happy that virtually all of his assistants were joining him in Minnesota. Looking at a home schedule that included Nebraska, Iowa and Wisconsin, he said that was both the good and the bad news.

Midway through his first season as coach of the Gopher football team, Jerry Kill talked about both his health and his observations about what it will take to return the Gophers to being competitive in the Big Ten. He said that with the help of Dunker Pat Smith and doctors at the Mayo Clinic his seizures were under control. He also thanked the Minnesota high school coaches, former Gophers and the many residents of Greater Minnesota who welcomed him and his wife during a rapid tour of the state before the start of the season.

Entering his second year as Gopher football coach, Kill said his team was going to be one of the youngest in the Big Ten with many sophomores and redshirt freshmen counted on to fill key roles. He said he was hoping for an injury-free year from his fifth-year senior quarterback, MarQueis Gray. Unfortunately, Gray was injured early and Kill had to turn to freshman Philip Nelson at quarterback. The team earned its first post-season bowl appearance since 2009.

The Gopher football coach said his young team benefitted from its bowl appearance against Texas Tech. He predicted strong competition for the starting quarterback job between sophomore Philip Nelson and redshirt freshman Mitch Leidner. His 2013 team achieved bowl eligibility in late October, and he took a leave of absence as head coach to focus on stabilizing his epilepsy. Longtime assistant Tracy Claeys served as acting head coach as Kill eased his way back into the job..

The Little Brown Jug made its initial Dunkers appearance just three days after Kill's Gopher football team defeated a favored Wolverine team 30-13 in Ann Arbor. The season finished with the Gophers having an 8-5 record with wins over both Iowa and Nebraska as well as a close 31-14 loss to eventual National Champion Ohio State.

Coach Kill spoke with great enthusiasm about the start of his fifth season as Gopher head coach. A little more than two months later, he announced his retirement after the return of seizures that had caused him to take a brief leave of absence during the 2013 season. After leading the Gophers to eight-win seasons in both 2013 and 2014, Coach Kill finished his Gopher career with a 29-29 record.
