A native of Chisholm, Minnesota, Joel Maturi was selected to unify the Gopher men's and women's athletic departments after the departures of Tom Moe and Chris Voelz. He inherited a department with a projected $31 million deficit and the dream of bringing football back home to campus. He had been the Athletic Director at Miami of Ohio and spent 10 years as an Assistant AD at Wisconsin.

Representatives from the Twins, Vikings and Gophers talked about their proposed new facilities. The Gophers received legislative approval in 2006 and will begin play in TCF Bank Stadium in 2009. The Twins, after 11 years of work by President Bell, reached a deal with Hennepin County and the Minnesota Legislature in that same 2006 session and will open Target Field in 2010. Kelly, President of the Vikings at the time, talked of the need to find a solution before the end of the Vikings' Metrodome lease in 2011. As of 2008 no solution had been found.

With construction under way at TCF Bank Stadium, Gopher Athletic Director Maturi and Associate Athletic Director Phil Esten gave Dunkers a preview of what to expect when Minnesota returns to campus on September 12, 2009, to play the Air Force Academy. The 50,000-seat open air facility could be expanded to 80,000 with the addition of a second deck. The stadium, with a budgeted cost of $287 million, will be used for convocations, graduations, intramural sports and as a permanent home for the University of Minnesota Marching Band.

Just two weeks before the opening of TCF Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota, President Bruininks and Athletic Director Joe Maturi hosted Dunkers at the new facility. The tour of the $288 million facility was the first Dunkers meeting away from the Minneapolis Club in more than a decade.

After introducing some 29 different Dunkers programs over his nine years as U of M Athletics Director; Maturi finally had a chance to be the subject of the meeting himself. He talked about major issues facing college sports such as expansion of major conferences and the topic of paying a stipend to student athletes. He talked about the search leading to the hiring of Jerry Kill, the decision to add Nebraska to the Big Ten and the potential monetary impact of a Big Ten Championship football game.
