Born in Minneapolis and raised in Roseau, Harris distinguished himself in both hockey and golf at the University of Minnesota. He was the second leading scorer on the 1974 Gopher National Championship Hockey team and two months later won the Big Ten individual championship in golf. He won the U.S. Amateur in 1993, the same year he played on the winning U.S. Walker Cup team. A Dunker member since 1989, he joined the Champions Tour in 2002 and won his first Tour event in 2006.

Just a day before the start of the first year of the new 3M Tournament, Lehman recalled that he appeared at Dunkers in 1996 and won the British Open just 23 days later. Hovland, a 21-year-old Oslo, Norway, native, had just won the U.S. Amateur and was new to the pro tour. Lehman, asked for this favorite golf story, told of the time he was paired with his wife in a mixed doubles event. On the first he hit a 285-yard drive down the middle, She shanked the next shot into the right rough. He hit a shot onto the green just 15 feet from the hole n the par 5, Her putt rolled 20 feet past the pin and he made the par putt coming back. En route to the second hole he commented that they were going to need to step up their game. "I don't know why you're mad at me," she said. "I only had two shots on that hole and you took three."

Dunker member and former British Open Champion John Harris welcomed Hollis Cavner to the program. Cavner, a Dunker since 1994, had brought several dozen famous golfers to Dunkers as the long-time promoter of the 3M Golf Championship. Cavner, in turn, introduced former Gopher golfer Erik van Rooyen, a South African who would be making his debut in the 3M event.

The 27-year-old Temple graduate quickly became known as one of the longest drivers on the pro tour. Standing 6-4, he develops great torque and hits his 5-iron 231 yards and his driver up to 340 yards.
