Part of the merger of the Minnesota North Stars with the Cleveland Barons resulted in new ownership of the new North Stars under brothers George and Gordon Gund. Within three seasons the North Stars were in the Stanley Cup finals, thanks in large part to their willingness to invest in the team. Karr was named team president under the Gunds.
