Just four days before beginning play in the NCAA Final Four; Coach Borton and guard Whalen talked about the path to the Final Four in New Orleans. Whalen scored 31 in a first-round victory over UCLA. She added 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds as the Gophers beat Kansas State 80-61. Center Janel McCarville scored 25 points with 15 rebounds as Boston College fell 76-63. Whalen had 27 points to lead the Gophers past favored Duke 82-75. Minnesota lost to champion Connecticut 67-58 in New Orleans.

By the time she left Minnesota after the 2003-'04 basketball season, Whalen held nearly every record in school history. Her 2,285 points topped Carol Ann Shudlick's previous mark by some 188 points. Whalen, who played her final two seasons under Coach Borton, returned to assist in coaching the 2006 team. Whalen was a three-time All American who was a first-round draft choice of the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA.

Under first-year coach Reeve the Minnesota Lynx team finished the season with a 13-21 record. Whalen, in her first season back in Minnesota, averaged 12.6 points per game, 4.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists and was named to play in the league's All-Star game.

Three months after their appearance at Dunkers, Coach Reeve and point guard Whalen celebrated the Lynx third WNBA title in the past five years. Reeve's Lynx teams have a 140-64 record under her leadership. Whalen returned to her native Minnesota in a 2010 trade with the Connecticut Sun. She won a gold medal for the United States in the 2012 Olympics and said she hoped to be chosen for the 2016 team.

Whalen, the all-WNBA point guard for the Minnesota Lynx, told of living on a cruise while representing the United States on its gold-medal run in the Rio Olympic Games. She talked of chatting up swimmer Michael Phelps while waiting for the teams to be announced at the closing ceremonies. Plummer, a backstroker who competed at the University of Minnesota, won a bronze medal at Rio in the 100-meter backstroke and received a gold medal for his heat swim in the 4x100 meter medley relay.

With Minnesota Lynx Coach Cheryl Reeve in attendance, Whalen thanked Coach Reeve and the entire Lynx organization for their guidance and support. She said she was humbled by the recent naming of the Hutchinson High School gymnasium after her. She said the new Gopher facilities were extremely important in her early recruiting and that she was eager for the season to begin. Asked about the biggest recruiting disadvantages, without missing a beat, she said, "None."

Asked about her favorite memory from her Gopher playing days she said it was a chance to compete in the Women’s Final Four. She said that Charles Barkley was her favorite pro athlete and that she looks forward to recruiting the best in-state athletes.
