Wes Fesler was out at Minnesota, and Warmath came here from Mississippi State. His first-year team defeated five nationally ranked opponents and finished with a 7-2 record. He would go on to coach 17 more seasons.

Minnesotans owed a lot to Ohio State in 1962. The Gophers Rose Bowl victory would not have happened if the Ohio State faculty senate had not voted 28-25 against sending the conference champion Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl. The faculty feared an "overemphasis on football." Hayes, in his 28 years as head coach at Ohio State, won 13 Big Ten championships and five national titles. While Hayes winced, Warmath said Minnesotans owed a vote of thanks to the Ohio State faculty senate.

Many of the members of Coach Warmath's Rose Bowl teams of 1961 and 1962 came together on the 35th anniversary of the 1960 National Championship team. Tom Brown and Bobby Bell won the Outland Trophy two years apart, and Greg Larson, Tom Hall, Brown, Carl Eller, Bell, John Campbell and Julian Hook (Dunker since 1986) all were named Erst-team All Big Ten.
