With Green purchasing a majority of the ownership, Clarke hired the recently retired Gainey as his head coach. Led by Neal Broten, Dave Gagner, Mike Modano and the 32-year-old Smith, the team responded to Gainey's coaching and advanced all the way to the sixth game of the Stanley Cup finals before losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
