A graduate of Deftance (Ohio) College, Borton was chosen to build on the success Brenda Oldfteld had started the year before. In her first year she led the team to a 26-5 record, second place in the Big Ten and into the NCAA Tournament where they made it to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history. Junior guard Lindsay Whalen led the team in scoring with 639 points.

The men's basketball team struggled to a 12-18 record and finished 1Oth in the Big Ten. Freshman Kris Humphries led the league in both scoring and rebounding and left for the NBA after one season. On the other hand, the women's program excelled in 2003-'04, making it to the Final Four for the first time in school history. Attendance soared as the team, led by senior guard Lindsay Whalen and junior center Janel McCarville, finished 25-9 in Borton's second year as head coach.

Just four days before beginning play in the NCAA Final Four; Coach Borton and guard Whalen talked about the path to the Final Four in New Orleans. Whalen scored 31 in a first-round victory over UCLA. She added 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds as the Gophers beat Kansas State 80-61. Center Janel McCarville scored 25 points with 15 rebounds as Boston College fell 76-63. Whalen had 27 points to lead the Gophers past favored Duke 82-75. Minnesota lost to champion Connecticut 67-58 in New Orleans.

Lindsay Whalen was gone to the WNBA, but Coach Borton's team still made it to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen before losing 64-57 to a Baylor team that went on to win the National Championship. All-American Center Janel McCarville led the team in scoring and was the first selection in the first round of the next WNBA draft. Jamie Broback, Shannon Schonrock and Kelly Roysland provided additional outside scoring.

A year removed from a Sweet Sixteen appearance, and missing stars Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville, the 2005-'06 Gopher women's basketball team made it back to NCAA play behind the play of Roysland and Jamie Broback. Roysland, an outstanding athlete, finished her career in 2007 as the 12th leading scorer in team history. The Fosston, Minnesota, native played a final year of volleyball after completing her basketball eligibility.

By the time she left Minnesota after the 2003-'04 basketball season, Whalen held nearly every record in school history. Her 2,285 points topped Carol Ann Shudlick's previous mark by some 188 points. Whalen, who played her final two seasons under Coach Borton, returned to assist in coaching the 2006 team. Whalen was a three-time All American who was a first-round draft choice of the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA.

Predicted to finish near the bottom of the Big Ten, Borton's young 2007-'08 Gopher basketball team finished with a 20-12 record and made it to the NCAA tournament, where they lost to Texas in the opening round. Junior guard Emily Fox led the team in scoring, followed by Leslie Knight and Ashley Ellis-Milan.

A pre-season first-team All Big Ten selection, senior guard Fox first came to the attention of television fans nationally as a premier cup stacker. A one-time world record holder, she has made appearances on The Ellen Show and CBS Early Show. Recruited by Coach Borton out of the Denver area, Fox was a member of the USA Pan American Gold Medal basketball team.

A new court at Williams Arena will be ready for the start of the new Gopher basketball season. Coach Smith talked of problems that were keeping two of his best players off the active roster, and Coach Borton talked of bringing in taller, more athletic freshmen to offset the loss of high scorer Emily Fox.

Both Gopher basketball coaches talked about the expected positive impact of freshmen to their teams. Coach Smith added the top-ranked players in both Minnesota (Joe Coleman) and Tennessee (Andre Hollins). Tubby also said he expected Trevor Mbakwe to be one of the top players in the Big Ten after starring on a collegiate all-star team over the summer. Coach Borton said newcomer Rachel Banham (Lakeville North) would start a point guard and remind a lot of fans of Lindsay Whalen.

Banham, the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year in 2011-12 and a preseason first-team All Big 10 point guard, had just been cleared to practice after doctors found a blood clot in her lung. Coach Borton, entering her 11th season, said she had high expectations from sophomore Micaella Riche, and that the team was looking forward to January when they would be joined by a 6'5 recruit from the Swedish National team, Amanda Zahui B.
