A seven-time winner on the PGA Tour, Simpson turned 50 in late 2005 and was making his first appearance at the 3M Championship in Blaine. Twice a national collegiate champion at UCLA, his biggest win as a pro came in 1987 when he birdied the 14th, 15th and 16th holes on his final round to overtake Tom Watson in the U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
