Gopher basketball fans were shocked when Athletic Director Joel Maturi announced he had hired Smith to take over the Gopher basketball program. Smith, one of the most successful and respected coaches in college basketball, left Kentucky to accept the Minnesota job. Named National Coach of the Year in 2003, Smith has coached at the college level for 17 seasons, and his teams won 20 or more games 15 times. In his first season at Minnesota his team, featuring mostly players he did not recruit, went from 8-22 in 2006-'07 to 20-13 under Smith. His 2008 recruiting class was ranked among the top 20 in the nation.

In Coach Smith's second year at Minnesota, his Gopher basketball team got off to a 12-0 start and were 16-1 at one point. Led by Lawrence Westbrook and Damian Johnson, the Gophers finished 22-11 and advanced into NCAA play where they lost to Texas in the first round.

Coach Smith talked of problems that were keeping two of his best players off the active roster, and Coach Borton talked of bringing in taller, more athletic freshmen to offset the loss of high scorer Emily Fox.

Both Gopher basketball coaches talked about the expected positive impact of freshmen to their teams. Coach Smith added the top-ranked players in both Minnesota (Joe Coleman) and Tennessee (Andre Hollins). Tubby also said he expected Trevor Mbakwe to be one of the top players in the Big Ten after starring on a collegiate all-star team over the summer. Coach Borton said newcomer Rachel Banham (Lakeville North) would start a point guard and remind a lot of fans of Lindsay Whalen.

As he moved into his sixth season as men's basketball coach at the University of Minnesota, Tubby needed only nine victories to reach 500 in his career as a head coach. Coming off a runner-up performance in the NIT, Smith said he had high expectations for the 2012-13 team. He said he would bring Trevor Mbakwe back slowly from knee surgery, but that he expected his team to do well in a rugged Big Ten that had five teams ranked in the early-season AP top 25 teams.
